South Africa Trip

Phiring  another beautiful village in the Mpumalanga province in South Africa, is affected by AIDS…Just another village? No, another community of human beings who are left up to themselves for the provision of their basic needs. Like many other villages in Africa, this village is home to many children orphaned by AIDS.  Their welfare is in the hands of their family members,( their siblings in many cases) and the community.

 Some Christian neighbors have taken this calling seriously… A local family has taken it on themselves to provide one meal to the orphans. They started the project five years ago and provided a meal weekly. At that time they used a make -shift outdoor “kitchen” to serve approximately 100 children and when it rained the children did not receive a meal.

Linda and Gerhard Veldman, natives of South Africa who came to the States 14 years ago heard about the need in this community and got involved. Since then the children are being fed daily, with the help of the farming community, in an indoor kitchen affiliated with a local church.

In June 2011, the Veldmans led a team from their church, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA back to their home country to help.  They brought supplies to patch the church roof and paint to brighten the interior walls.  They brought professionals to offer grief and abuse counseling and others to assist with a vacation bible school (VBS) for the children.  They filled large bags with basic South African staples and provided over 60 families with enough food for a few weeks.  But most of all, they brought hope with them - the hope of Jesus Christ, the one who died to rescue his creation from sin and sickness, and rose to bring abundant life to all who trust in him. 

Another nearby village called Rietfontein had its own share of difficulties, so the group from Westminster PCA joined forces with Pastor Sipho, pastor of the local church, to seek to be a blessing to the village.  They assisted with another VBS, provided more counseling and encouragement, and put up a fence around a community garden to keep the goats out.  They also improved the local community center by installing indoor plumbing to help with cooking and putting up curtains and insulation to help abate the heat of the African sun.

Many rightly admire the crew from Westminster Presbyterian Church for being willing to fly across the world to help out.  But seen from their perspective, the only one who deserves recognition is the God of Creation who is on a mission to put his world back together through the victory of Christ.  And if you asked, they’d tell you they were just humbled by the opportunity to be the messengers.
